All Equal

A veneer of values
All encompassing love and understanding corrupted by the culture we cling to
Recoating tarnished armour to make the soul appear whole
Nothing left to protect
Empty Inside
Eaten out by society’s lies
 “We had no choice”
“It is the way it is”
“It was for the best”
“What else could we do?”

Do you still hear the voices within
Calling your name
Calling you to something more
Than playing it safe
Getting ahead with words playing hide and seek with honesty

Fighting low self-esteem
Battling obesity
As you finish your plateful of quick fixes
Just the way they taught you to
The need to feed a constant greed
In the hope of one day being satisfied

Oranges and lemons, a pocket full of posies
They taught you life’s not all a bed of roses
But who laid the thorns of torture and torment
When last were you found in the moment

They barked about the dog that bit
Money made the man corrupt when striving to survive
But lay all plans aside and tell me what you find

Bouncing ideas back and forth but never the truth on the table
No matter how you lay your sword it cuts both sides
Just wipe the blade and walk away
Clear your conscience with “it’s always them not us”

Dancing to rituals of inequality
We have rights you know
Upheld by the ones who fell through the words they promised you
Chains of conformity binding us all the same

We are all equal
Equally miserable
Equally beautiful
Equally free to choose
