One Night

Still chilled by the morning sun
Of a night before undone
Chilled fingertips
The night has slipped
Beneath the sheets of a bed unmade

Promises cushioning excuses
As we utter words now useless
Floating no more like a ship run ashore

Passion propelled a train off the track
Fleeting feelings we can’t get back

Unable to raise a comfortable gaze
Straightening out creases that cover our weakness
Brushing thoughts from my hair that we ever cared
You whispered words in my ear I was longing to hear
A magical night banished by light

Fools to believe in passions release
Ego now fed that I’ve had you in my bed
Leaving behind lies in the sky to sink beneath the horizon of hope

Why do we feel shame?
Only Eros to blame
For a night together that never promised forever
Just cast in illusions we wished would last
