What’s the matter with me

We can argue the logic and change all the rules
We can be clever and witty and run with the fools
But to betray the voice of my heart, the sound of my soul
What a price to pay what a heavy toll

Clever we sound as logic abounds
Accepted by people with whom we surround
Fitting into the mould of the story we’re told
Never looking within for our own story to begin

We act out the play they’ve told us to say
Wanting to keep being part of the sheep
Afraid to discover you’re not liked by another
Rejected by the flock if you make your own mark
So you do as they do to be part of their group too

Never thinking of you never thinking what’s true
Never meeting your soul never becoming whole
When you know that you hide from the voices outside
Then the voices inside are aware you have lied
When you honour your inner voice you make your own choice
You’re then free to be the person you wish to see

When the words of their reason to your soul are not pleasing
You stand by your belief with a heart of relief
That you said the word that didn’t want to be heard
But you never betrayed the self that you’d made
When you refuse to depart from what’s right in your heart
Then you can see what’s the matter with me
